the proceeding

years together dissipate
it only took one call
we each agreed
we each had needs
i asked if we could stall

leave the past of hurtful burden
locked up and lose the key
you still said “no”
took leave to go
we parted amicably

today we gave it all away
words once spoken, now untrue
though long ago
to have, to hold
broke down from our misuse

neither of us innocent
both of us surprised
we got so lost
a heavy cost
paid through committed crimes

how can you say that you forgive
but that you can’t forget?
if the slate were clean
then we’d be free
from all resentments we had left

all this to say i still love you
and that i always will
the bonds we broke
harsh words we spoke
i forgive, forget and now rebuild
